Ingredient	Role	Notes
Potting soil	Provides a small amount of nutrients and organic matter.	Look for a low-nutrient, peat-free compost to avoid excessive moisture retention.
Coarse sand/Horticultural grit	Improves drainage and aeration.	Do not use fine sand from beaches or gardens, as it can compact and inhibit drainage.
Perlite	A lightweight volcanic glass that creates air pockets for better aeration and drainage.	Use alongside or as an alternative to pumice. Dampen before mixing to avoid dust.
Pumice	A porous volcanic rock that offers excellent drainage and aeration.	It is heavier than perlite and tends to last longer without breaking down.
Coconut coir	An environmentally friendly, renewable alternative to peat moss that offers good moisture retention without compaction.	Use in moderation, as high organic matter can lead to excessive moisture.
Lava rock	A porous, inorganic material that enhances drainage and provides minerals.	A decorative and functional additive.
